Whether
regarded as a relaxing pastime or lethal habit, the
act of smoking holds a historical gamut of associations
and symbolisms. Glamour, seduction, intellectualism,
status, defiance and ‘the stranger’are some
of the many projections on stage and screen, in literature
and advertising.
These features and scenarios have formed the basis for
this screen printed series- from the posturing of pipe
smokers to playing with the traditional opulence of
the cigar label.
The work is a visual investigation into the peculiarities
of this activity at a point where tobacco use is very
much the zeitgeist of this decade and fast approaching
the end of an era.
